FrenchImmersion/Francophone Program

 

Westwood Community High School in partnership with Centre Boreal

(francophone school) has embarked on creating a Frenchfirst language

program for the benefit of the students from bothschools.

 

2004 - 2005 was the first year of our partnership,which enabled us to expand from offering only French Language Arts to addingEtudes Sociales at the grade 9 level. Due to our partnership with CentreBoreal, we currently offer French Language Arts from grades 9 – 12, EtudesSociales from grades 9 – 12, Math 9 along with the Pure and Applied streamsfrom grades 10 – 12, Science 9 and 10, as well as Physics 20 and 30, Chemistry20 and next year we look at offering Chemistry 30 for the first time.

 

This partnership provides a unique opportunity forstudents to not only maintain their French language skills, but to expand them.The cultural and linguistic enrichment provided by Centre Boreal will be avalued benefit.

 

Bilingual Certificate

 

Students enrolled in our French Immersion/Francophone program have aunique opportunity to graduate with a Bilingual Certificate. In order to receive a bilingual certificatefrom Westwood Community High School,students must register in all four French core courses in grades 9.

At the grade 10 level, students must be enrolled in FLA 10 and ÉtudesSociales 10. Students can also enrol in French Math 10 Pure or Applied as wellas French Science 10.

In grade 11 students must be enrolled in French Language Arts 20 andÉtudes Sociales 20, in order to maintain the student’s eligibility for abilingual certificate. Students may also enrol in French Math 20 Pure orApplied, French Chemistry 20 and French Physics 20.

In grade 12 students must be enrolled in French Language Arts 30 andEtudes Sociales 30 in order to maintain a student’s eligibility for a bilingualcertificate. Students may also enrol in French Math 30 Pure or Applied andFrench Physics 30.

Students who take fewer than 40 credits by the end of grade 12 willreceive a Bilingual Certificate of Merit. Students who take 40 credits or moreby the end of grade 12 will receive a Bilingual Certificate of Excellence. Thenumber of credits the student has taken will appear on the certificate.

 

Course descriptions for French Immersion/Francophone Students

 

French Language Arts/Français 9

Prerequisite: previous Immersion/Francophone study

This course is a continuation of the skills acquired at the elementary and

junior high levels. This course enables students to increase their proficiency

in the skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening through the use of a

variety of literary genres and activities.

French Language Arts/Français 10

5 crédits

Prerequisite: 50% in Grade 9 Immersion or Francophone

This course requires considerable fluency in all aspects of the French

language as a prerequisite. Novel study, plays, short stories and poems are

the literary components of this course. One of the prime objectives is oral

fluency and considerable time is spent in this area. Additional knowledge of

grammar and the study of idiomatic expressions are other important

elements

French Language Arts/Français 20

5 Credits

Prerequisite: 50% in French Language Arts 10

This course continues to emphasize grammar study, compositions and oral

presentations. Students continue their study of literature through plays,

novels and other literary genres.

Études Sociales 9

Prerequisite: previous Immersion/Francophone study

The focus of study is on industrialization and the way the United States and

the former Soviet Union organized their economies. Issues related to

technological change will be emphasized in the study of Canada. The

relationships among economic growth, economic organization and quality of

life will be examined.

Études Sociales 10

5 crédits

Prerequisite: 50% in Etudes Sociales 9

Canada in the Modern World

This course emphasizes the study and appreciation of Canada and the forces

and events that have influenced Canada's development. The course also

illustrates how responsible citizenship requires an understanding of the

structure and function of government.


Les Mathématiques 9

In this course, students will expand their knowledge of integers,exponents, rational numbers, ratio and proportion, measurement, geometry,graphing, trigonometry, and solving equations. Problem solving will beemphasized through the course.

 

Science 9 (en Français)

The course is a continuation of the science programs offered atthe junior high level. The course includes units on biology, chemistry, andphysics. Students particularly enjoy the many new activities offered by the newcurriculum. This is a hands-on/activity oriented course.

Science 10 (en Français) 5crédits

Science 10 is designed as a prerequisite for the following20-level

Science courses: Biology 20, Chemistry 20, Physics 20 and Science

20 (not offered at Westwood).

The Science 10 curriculum covers concepts of biology, chemistry,physics and other sciences, and introduces the differences between them.Science 10 also shows students how the three sciences are related and how theyapply to the world around us. It includes pure science, applied science, andtechnology. Topics covered include: Energy from the Sun; Matter and Energy inLiving Systems (Biology); Matter and Energy in Chemical Change (Chemistry);Energy and Change (Physics), Matter in the globe and (méteo).

Physique 20 is designed as a prerequisite for the following30-level

Physique course. The Physique 20 curriculumcovers concepts of kinematic, Dynamique, Waves and energy.

Chimie course. The Chimie 20 curriculum covers concepts ofgaz, solution, stchimetry and bonding.
